Lockhart's Goon Grease review

I've reviewed quite a lot of Lockhart's pomades over the span that I've had this channel/blog started. Strangely enough, I've not yet reviewed their flagship product. Whenever you think of Lockhart's, this is the first product that comes to mind. Today we've got Goon Grease; their heavy hold pomade that isn't a finger-breaker to work with. Kindly sent by Steve and Nichole a few months back, we're gonna dive right in and see what we've got.

Packaging

Goon Grease comes in a black 4 oz tin with a screw lid top. This is the newer tin that they've recently swapped to and I absolutely love how much sturdier they feel. Label designs are still in unison with the other Lockhart's products however, you get a reflective finish on the 'Goon Grease' text. The overall packaging just looks stunningly gorgeous.

Scent

Goon Grease is available in various scents. You've got cinnamon sandalwood, lemon and citrus cologne, which is what they've sent me. You get a nice hit of citrus with a soft hint of cucumber. It smells really clean and it's not too overbearing which is really great.

Application

Even though it's advertised as a heavy hold, this pomade is so easy to scoop out. All you need is some slight pressure and you can effortlessly get a good amount scooped out. Breaking it down is just as easy, feeling thick, sticky and just slightly waxy. Goes into your hair with some tug and pull, but nothing harsh compared to most heavy hold pomades.

Slickness

You get a good amount of slickness and stickiness with this pomade, so combing it through is a breeze. It keeps everything nice and tight and I find that my strays and cowlick fight me much less than usual.

Control

Despite the easy application, you still get solid hold and control. Styling with this product feels like you're using a medium hold with an added boost. It's easy to get a good amount of height while still being able to retain good shape and tightness all around. It's indeed a very well balanced heavy hold.

Strength

Described as a heavy to most, but I personally feel that it's slightly more of a firm hold. You still get a good amount of hold and the density of it really helps to keep it in place without weighing it down much. If your local weather isn't as hot as mine, you'd probably feel that it'll give you more hold.

Shine

Supposed to provide a high shine, but I feel that it's more of a medium shine at best. Still a lot more shine than other heavy hold pomades though.

Durability

As the name suggest, this product is definitely greasier than most heavies. It's not as waxy, so it's not going to hold up as well in the heat. That's not to say it completely falls apart, but you might feel your hair feeling a bit softer on hotter days when using this pomade. Nonetheless, it still holds up well enough for most days and remains easily restylable.

Washability

Even though it's not as waxy, a lot of that greasiness is still going to take some washes to get rid of. I find that 3-4 washes with shampoo should get the job done. The buildup may not be as clean but still works fantastically, especially when used on it's own on consecutive days.

Price-point

If purchased directly from their online store, it'll cost you $47.46 SGD ($35.10 USD) including shipping costs. Not cheap for sure, but there are plenty of resellers here locally that sell for an average price of $25 SGD ($18.48 USD). Best purchased locally depending on wherever you're located.

Verdict

Lockhart's is a brand that needs little to no introduction. There's a reason why they've gotten where they are today and they've always been my personal favourite brand and brewer.

There's a clear reason why Goon Grease is put up on a pedestal within the pomade community. It is all around an excellent pomade. It's not a pain to work with, you get a good amount of hold and provides fantastic shine. There's really not much to be said about this pomade other than the fact that it's amazing. If you twisted my arm and asked what I don't like about it, I'd say that I'd love for it to be able to hold up in really hot weather better, but even I know that's just being nitpicky and ridiculous.

You can definitely see why Lockhart's Goon Grease has gotten it's reputation. It's a good choice whether it's your first pomade or your last. If you've yet to try it, I urge you to. Get yourself a tin of Lockhart's Goon Grease and join the Goon Legion. You'll never look back.
