A few weeks ago we had a look at Ziggy Supply's Temasek Pomade. Today we've got another product from them, and that is Mad Wax; a water-based wax product. It's been recently reformulated and refined to perform better than the previous version. How much better? Well let's get into it and find out.
Packaging
Mad Wax comes in the same 3.5 oz plastic tub that majority of the other Ziggy products come in. Label design resembles quite closely to that of Singa Pomade's with pink accents all around the jar. Gives it a very striking appearance that reminds me of Alexi Laiho's guitars, which is probably why I like it a lot. Information is all well displayed and there's not really much to say about it.
Scent
Described as a smooth mint lavender scent. What I get is this prominent menthol smell with a rather fragrant tone. It's a decent scent but to be honest, it reminds me of medicine with a mint flavouring. Pretty odd, but I wouldn't say it's off-putting either.
Application
The consistency of the product is where most of the change between the old and new formula can be seen. What previously was a soft, almost spongey cream has now been changed to a runny cream that looks identical to yogurt. If you're familiar with the Gatsby Moving Rubber line, that's what it looks like. Scooping out the product is literally effortless. Breaks down just the same and you'll start to feel some grip come into play. Goes into your hair with very minor tugging and pulling so it's definitely not discomforting at all.
Texture
The product combs through really easily, but a lot of that initial slickness dries up later on. Once the product settles in the hair, it provides a nice, soft texture that can either be fingercombed or combed regularly. A fairly nice balance between being messy and neat.
Control
I've found little to no issue styling with this wax. Height and volume is effortlessly attained while still providing nice shape. The lack of stickiness does have a tendency to lose control over stubborn strays, but it's not terrible.
Strength
The hold you get with this pomade is definitely enough, though it feels somewhat like a medium or medium firm at best. Not the craziest amount of hold, but it can provide enough hold for most hairstyles.
Shine
I wouldn't say it's completely matte, but it falls somewhere in between a really low to matte shine.
Durability
The product feels really lightweight and soft in the hair. Due to that, I find it falling out of place a bit easily now and then. Especially in harsher weather conditions or if you're walking around a lot, you might find yourself touching up or restyling your hair quite a bit.
Washability
Rinsing it gets a lot of the product out and leaves behind a soft buildup, but 1 shampoo wash pretty much gets it all out.
Price-point
Purchased directly from their online store would cost $20 SGD ($14.86 USD). Shipping costs are excluded for Singaporeans and international shipping prices will vary depending on where you are.
Verdict
I think that Ziggy Supply has a pretty broad spectrum of products. From their gel types, unorthodox water-based pomades to clays, they've definitely got most of their bases covered. Mad Wax, fills in a rather unique spot in their lineup.
I find it to be a rather versatile product. It's like a nice balance in between Temasek Pomade and Singa Pomade. It provides a fair amount of texture, great volume but can still go for a slightly neater look. The application with this is ridiculously easy and styling with it is rather pleasant as well. My only cons with it are that the endurance isn't too great as it falls out of shape a bit too easy for me and a part of me does wish it was water soluble. Not that I have issues with product buildup, but being water soluble would've just been icing on the cake.
Overall, Mad Wax still earns my seal of approval. As aforementioned, it's a pretty unique and versatile product that can serve various hairstyles. Definitely worthy of a spot on your shelf if you're looking for something a little different.
