Big Slick Firm Hold Hair Pomade review

Today we're gonna continue reviewing another product from the Big Slick line. We've looked at their Heavy Hold several weeks back, but today we're turning our attention to the Firm Hold Hair Pomade. Without further ado, let's take a closer look at the product.

Packaging

Just like the other Big Slick pomade, the Firm comes in a 3.4 oz metal tin with a screw top lid. The label designs are consistent with their other pomades with a purple colour. Information is all presented very clearly on the back. I've said this for all the other Big Slick pomades and how I like everything about it.

Scent

The scent is lavender and black pepper, and it is absolutely mind-blowing. It has the fragrant smell of lavender paired with the spicy kick from the black pepper. It's truly phenomenal and I can't get enough of it. Not an overbearing scent either, but you'll catch whiffs of it throughout the day.

 

Application

Scooping out the product does take out a bit of effort, but it's not too hard to get a nice waxy scoop. Breaking out down feels really thick and waxy with quite some grip to it. Goes into your hair just the same so I'd definitely recommend applying in smaller amounts or into damp hair.

Slickness

Despite being a waxier product, it combs through fairly easy. Has just enough resistance, but not too much to make combing it through painful. The amount of stickiness is just right to keep everything nice and tight as well.

Control

The pomade is pretty lightweight. Paired with the waxy, sticky consistency of the product, it makes for a pleasant styling experience. Height is easily attained and it has no issue staying that way.

Strength

Out of all the Big Slick products that I've used, the Firm has the most truest hold to it's name. Because of how waxy, lightweight and sticky it is, I find that it makes for the perfect firm holding product.

Shine

Provides a fairly low and natural shine.

 

Durability

Waxy products are known to hold up in hot weather perfectly fine, and this one does that just as well. I find myself needing very minimal touch ups or restyles and a lot of the hold is retained throughout the entire day. It has a very nice, clean feel in the hair as well so it's not going to feel overly greasy.

Washability

It takes about 3-4 showers with shampoo to wash all the product out. It leaves behind a very nice and clean buildup which makes for great next day styling.

Price-point

It costs $37.32 SGD ($28.52 USD) including shipping to Singapore when bought directly from their Etsy store. Definitely not the cheapest pomade, but I don't think it's an absurd price to pay.

Verdict

There's not much I've not said about Big Slick. I've probably said it countless times on how I've always been fond of the brand.

Out of all the Big Slick pomades that I've used, the Firm hold has easily got to be my favourite. Even though the other Big Slick products have their holds slightly less than advertised, this one is definitely true to the name. Waxy, lightweight, slightly sticky and slick; it makes for the perfect combination. It's unique scent just ties everything together and makes for a really solid pomade. The application may not be the smoothest and it does take a bit more to wash it out, but that's just being unreasonably nit picky.

There's a reason why I chose this pomade to be in my Top 5 of 2017. It is a very well rounded firm hold pomade and has a remarkable performance. This is in my opinion, the most perfect firm oil based pomade that I've used so far. It goes without saying that I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a strong holding product. Definitely get yourself that big slick look.
