Mad Rat The Classic Grease review

Today we've got another Singaporean homebrewed pomade to be reviewed. Kindly sent by Ian, here we have The Classic Grease from Mad Rat; a non-petro oil based pomade with a medium hold. Without any further hesitation, let's see what this product has to offer.

Packaging

The Classic Grease comes in a 3.38 oz metal tin with a screw top lid. The label on the lid features the Mad Rat mascot with basic information of the product well displayed all around in purple and white accents. Directions, ingredients and further information can be found on the back of the tin. The design itself is pretty standard and typical, but is still presentable nonetheless.

Scent

Described as a lavandula and melaleuca scent, what you're gonna get is a lavender tea tree smell. Definitely not an off putting scent, but I'm not a fan of it either. It reminds me of a Body Shop product and for a hair product targeted towards rockabilly and kustom kulture, I think it deserves more character and uniqueness. Either way, it's a fairly subtle scent which doesn't bother me throughout the day.

Application

Non-petro OBs have a knack for being hard to be scooped out. That's not the case with this pomade, which I suspect is all thanks to the presence of the bentonite clay in this pomade. A bit of pressure needed, but it's still fairly easy to get a nice scoop. Breaks down nice and smooth with some minor wax separation, but it doesn't take much to fully break it down. Applies into the hair smoothly with very minimal tugging or pulling.

Slickness

Despite not being a really greasy-feeling pomade, you can still get really good slickness from this pomade. You can feel a very slight grittiness from the clay, but it doesn't deter from the slickness at all. It's able to keep the hair very nicely in place without losing too much control of strays.

Control

This pomade has very good styling capabilities. It's not too dense and the clay helps to provide a decent amount of volume. Paired with the slickness, it helps to shape the hair really well.

Strength

You definitely get a medium hold with this. It's very nicely balanced and has just enough hold to keep it in place well.

Shine

Has a low to medium shine. Brings a nice lustre to the hair.

Durability

For a medium hold pomade, it does a pretty decent job of holding up throughout the day. The hold and slickness does lift a little after a while, but it still retains a good amount to be restyled when needed. May not be the best to use this pomade on hotter days, but it will do just fine for the most part.

Washability

Even though it's a non-petro OB, it still takes quite a bit to fully wash it out. I find about 2-3 washes with shampoo should cleanse it all out. It also leaves behind a nice buildup for next day styling.

Price-point

When bought directly off their website, this pomade costs $18 SGD ($13.40 USD). International shipping rates will vary on your location.

Verdict

I only came to know about Mad Rat fairly recently. They don't only sell grooming products, but also clothes and motorcycle accessories. Most of their pomades are gel-type water-based ones but upon further inspection, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they have an OB to offer as well. So when Ian hit me up for a review, I told him that the OB was what I would be more keen on trying and that's exactly what I got.

I am honestly impressed with how The Classic Grease performs for me. It's a really user-friendly and intuitive pomade with nicely balanced qualities overall. The application and styling is straightforward and it has the right amount of hold and slickness to support multiple hairstyles. I don't really agree with the scent choice, the endurance was slightly lacking for me personally, and I felt that the washout should be a bit easier like most non-petro OBs.

At the end of the day, The Classic Grease is still a good OB pomade. In a country where most users consume crappy gels, it's nice to have a good tin of grease readily available nearby. Especially if you're concerned about the use of petrolatum in pomades and want one that's not a pain to scoop, this one's right in your alley. Mad Rat's The Classic Grease will definitely get you going.
