Big Slick Original Hair Pomade review

We'll be looking at another one of Big Slick's pomades. Today we have Big Slick Original Hair Pomade; a medium hold oil-based pomade that's widely appreciated within the pomade community. Without any further hesitation, let's get into it.

Packaging

Big Slick OG comes in the familiar 3.4 oz metal tin seen with their other pomades. Designs are all consistent throughout with a teal blue colour-way for this one in particular. You get more information displayed on the back of the tin including the ingredients. Very simple, very nice.

Scent

The OG comes in a barbershop scent. This is hands down, my favourite barbershop scent of all time. Arguably even my all time favourite scent. While most barbershop scents tend to be more prominent with notes of talc or bay rum, this one smells like barbicide. Has a very clean, almost anti-septic smell to it and it is so addictive. It's not too overbearing, but stays subtle enough to be noticed.

Application

Scooping out the pomade takes little to no effort. It comes out with ease and breaks down feeling slightly thick, but really slick and slightly greasy. Goes into the hair really easily with practically no tugging or pulling whatsoever.

Slickness

You can expect really good slickness with this pomade. Keeps everything nice and tight without any problem. That initial greasiness does lift into a more cleaner feel, which I find to be peculiar but pleasant as well. Gives you nice slickness without being too oily.

Control

Styling with this pomade feels very reminiscent of an old school medium hold. It's really lightweight and slick and while that helps to keep all the strays in check, getting height and volume can be a bit of a trick. It definitely takes a bit of finesse to really get my regular pomp with this pomade, but it's still achievable nonetheless.

Strength

Even though advertised as a medium hold, I would definitely say it's a light-medium at best. Not the best product to go with if you're aiming to get height, but it still provides more than enough hold for tight contours and slickbacks.

Shine

Gives off a nice medium shine.

Durability

Being a lighter medium holding pomade, it's unfair to expect it to put up brilliantly with hot weather. Do expect plenty of touch ups and restyles if you plan to use this on a hotter day but for less active days sitting in the office, it'll do more than alright.

Washability

Being a less waxy medium, it's relatively easy to wash it out. About 1-2 washes with shampoo will get your hair fully clean. It leaves behind a small buildup that can be used on consecutive days.

Price-point

It costs $34.83 SGD ($26.44 USD) including shipping to Singapore if you buy it directly from their Etsy store. A fair price for a pomade that's hard to come across in these parts.

Verdict

Big Slick OG is one of those products you always hear about within the pomade community. It has a massive following behind it and for good reason too.

It's a really user-friendly oil-based pomade. Scoops out and applies like nothing, gives really good slickness without being too greasy, provides ample hold, has a brilliant scent and doesn't take much to be washed out. The hold may not be the strongest and can be tricky to work with, especially in hot weather, but everything else about it is absolutely brilliant. There's really little to nothing that I do not like about this pomade.

Overall, Big Slick Original is such a great pomade. It's a really good product for people to get their feet wet into oil-based pomades and it's also a great pickup for pomade veterans as well. It's definitely a must-have for all the collectors. Uphold that big slick look and get yourself a tin of Big Slick Original.
