This Label Is Too Damn Simple Pomade review

If you're a member of the Everything Pomade or Pomade Marketplace Malaysia Facebook group, you might be familiar with the work of Afiq Nazhan. Not only is he one of the reviewers from the Malaya Greaser Youtube channel, but he's also been brewing up his own pomades. I recently got acquainted with him and he told me he was gonna send me something but refused to tell me what it was. Fast forward a few weeks later, and This Label Is Too Damn Simple arrived at my doorstep.

Packaging

TLITDS comes in the standard 3.5 oz amber glass jar that you always see with Malaysian brewers. Upon first glance the label might look plain and cheap but that's literally in the name of the pomade. It even has your name and a serial number printed on the side. Gives it a very custom and personalised feel.

Scent

The main difference between each TLITDS that everyone receives is with the scent. Afiq will custom brew you a scent according to your desire. But since mine was gifted to me, he brewed mine in a coffee scent and it smells absolutely perfect. You get that rich and deep coffee ground scent that isn't too overpowering, but will keep hitting you whenever the wind blows and such.

Application

Scooping out the pomade takes minimal effort. You get this nice, thick greasy wax which is reminiscent of a PND or a Lockhart's pomade. Breaking it down is just as easy and gives you this sticky and waxy consistency. Goes into your hair with some tugging and pulling, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Slickness

It combs through fairly easily. You get a good amount of slickness but it also has some nice waxy resistance to it. The two qualities balance each other out really well. Gives you a very nice and tight slick look.

Control

Because it's very well balanced, you get really good control with the pomade. Gives you enough hold to get good height while still retaining a nice round shape.

Strength

The waxiness if the product does allow for good height, but nothing out of the ordinary. The hold walks that line between being a firm and a medium. Nonetheless, it's still more than enough.

Shine

Has a nice medium sheen to it.

Durability

I find that it holds up really well throughout the day. Unless I'm out and about, I hardly find the need to restyle my hair. The pomade has just enough hold to keep your hair in place for extended hours. It also retains a good amount of slickness to be able to restyle without hassle. The scent, although not as prominent, lingers around for most of the day as well.

Washability

Just like your standard OB pomade, about 3-4 washes with shampoo. You get a nice waxy buildup with the first few washes which allows for better hold on consecutive uses with the product.

Price-point

The pomade itself costs $18 SGD, but shipping it here would add another $2 SGD. $20 SGD ($14.35 USD) in total for this is an absolute steal.

Verdict

From what I understand, Afiq Nazhan is fairly new to the brewing game. His previous concoction, The Mitos' Zeus, had a pretty good reception amongst the Malaysian pomade community. After trying TLITDS for myself, I can clearly see why. This pomade is without a doubt a good one. Application is a breeze, styling is really easy and it's able to hold up throughout the day pretty well. It's just a really well-rounded OB pomade.

If I had to nitpick, it would be that I partially wish it was more of a true firm hold. Even then, I really have no issues with it's current hold. It just feels a bit more like a medium and you only get a firm hold when used on top of buildup from second day use.

That aside, I still think that this is an amazing OB pomade. I doubt that you can get your hands on this custom batch as of now, but Afiq did tell me that he's currently working on a new line of pomades; including an UWB/cream pomade and a clay. I'm not certain if they'll be part of The Mitos line or if they'll retain the Greek mythology theme but if they perform anything like TLITDS, you definitely do not want to miss out on them.

Update: Afiq has officially started a Facebook page for his upcoming product line called Chimera Craft. Link's down below and if you're keen on getting a jar of TLITDS, you could drop him a DM through that page.
