Recently, Lockhart's dropped a bombshell on us and released a triad of limited edition pomades. Being the Metalhead that he is, Steve Lockhart decided to pay homage to the music genre and incorporated it in these products. The pomades are 'Grease Sells, But Who's Buying', 'Michiganian Hunger' and 'Epicus Goonicus Greaseicus'. What's more interesting however is what's inside the jars, for they are not mere oil based pomades that Lockhart's usually produces. Steve himself has stated that these are what he calls an unorthodox oil based pomade; an easier to wash version of his ever-popular Goon Grease. Enough rambling, let's just dive in.
Packaging
All three pomades come in a 4 oz amber glass jar with a black lid. Has a matte black label around the side with information displayed well on both ends of it. Each pomade also features a spoof design based on three different bands. 'Grease Sells, But Who's Buying' is a spoof of a vintage Peace Sells t-shirt from Megadeth, 'Michiganian Hunger' is based off of Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger album cover, and 'Epicus Goonicus Greaseicus' is a spoof of Candlemass' Epicus Doomicus Metallicus album cover. All brilliantly designed and features the famous rat fink that we see on Goon Grease. For those interested, these designs are also available as t-shirts.
Scent
Aside from the label designs, the scents are what differentiates the three pomades.
'Grease Sells, But Who's Buying' has a Thrash scent which is denim, leather and hint of cologne. Oddly though, it smells more like cologne with a hint of leather. It surprised me quite a bit as I'm normally not a fan of leather scents as they tend to give me a headache. This one, I was able to tolerate quite a bit.
'Michiganian Hunger' has a Winterfrost scent which is mahogany, cold steel and citrus. In all honesty, I can't really make out what I smell. It has this cool muskiness to it. Sad to say however, this one also doesn't agree with me well.
'Epicus Goonicus Greaseicus' has a Bewitched scent which is rosewood, dragon's blood and musk. What I mostly smell is the dragon's blood and while I have trouble describing it, it's safe to say that this is my favourite out of the three. Not a scent I'm head over heels for, but it doesn't give me a mild headache.

Application
This pomade scoops out super easy, requiring minimal pressure. Breaks down just as easy, feeling rather sticky and greasy in your hands as you warm it up. Goes into your hair like a dream. I barely experienced any tugging or pulling whatsoever.
Slickness
It's no surprise that combing through the product comes without issue. Has amazing slickness and the stickiness of the pomade really keeps everything nice and tight.
Control
Even though it's advertised as a firm or heavy, I personally feel that it styles a bit like a light hold pomade. Has this light and airy feel and it does take me some time to get it to look how I want it to be. While the initial styling isn't exactly ideal for me, I find that the product styles better when it's settled in my hair, especially in cooler environments. It firms and dries up ever so slightly to give the hold an added boost and I find that really helps me style my hair better.
Strength
Even though it's stated to be a firm/heavy, I find it to be more of a medium or medium/firm at best. It's probably the effect of the hotter weather here so the pomade would probably feel heavier in colder climates.
Shine
Usually ranges between a medium to low shine for me depending on how much product I use.
Durability
Because it's supposed to cater to an easier washing experience and it's not a waxy-heavy pomade, it doesn't do the best job in holding up in the heat as I've stated before. Even though it's not going to completely fall apart in the sun, you should still expect to restyle if you're going to be on the move while using this product.
Washability
Even though it's an unorthodox oil based pomade, you'd still need to wash it pretty thoroughly before it's completely removed from your hair. I do find that it takes several washes to fully wash out, but the first wash completely removed any greasy feeling that the pomade has. It leaves behind a really nice and clean waxy buildup. I'd say it would take 2-4 washes with shampoo to clean out.
Price-point
Including shipping to Singapore, the pomade costs $49.65 SGD ($36.45 USD). Not cheap indeed, but this is a limited edition after all. Also international shipping costs more than the product itself. Easily affordable for Americans but costly for foreigners. It all boils down to how much you want to own this limited run from Lockhart's.
Verdict
It is no surprise that the main reason I bought these three pomades is because they're themed after Metal bands. Put that together with one of my favourite homebrewers and you have me sold. However, what's more important about these products is the start towards innovating oil based pomades which I feel should be addressed.
As the name suggests, EZ Wash Goon Grease is simply formulated to be a variant of Goon Grease that's easier to wash out. What I like about this pomade is how effortless the application process is and it truly is easier to wash out then most oil based pomades. Although it still requires several washes, a lot of the greasiness comes out in one wash and I do appreciate the clean buildup left behind. My main issue would be the lack of hold that I'm able to get. Even though it seems to work fine in colder climates, it's not something that I can depend on with the weather here.
With that being said, I'm beyond ecstatic to see brewers continue to improve on what oil based pomades can be. An easy wash oil based pomade would be an absolute game changer and I'd love to see Lockhart's further improve on EZ Wash Goon Grease. If the amount of hold and endurance can be enhanced, it'd be perfect. Nonetheless, I think this limited edition run is not only interesting but a good start to what may come in the future. They're still available through Lockhart's store if you're keen. Whether you're a Metalhead, a fan of Lockhart's pomades, or both, this line is worth checking out.
