Today's review won't be of a homebrewed product. Even though the homebrewer community in Malaysia is fairly prominent, there's an equal amount of companies that provide white label products cooked in factories. Jadioc is one of those companies and they've recently sent me their line of rebranded products. We're gonna take a closer look at their strong hold water-based pomade; Black Jacket.
Packaging
Black Jacket comes in a whopping 5.3 oz white plastic tub packed in a nice box (not pictured). Label on the top features a dapper punk man with the brand's logo and you get ingredients and directions along the side. Overall, the product is well presented and I like how you get your money's worth with the amount.
Scent
Black Jacket comes in a perfume scent. Pretty much just smells like a fairly cheap cologne. It's not a bad scent, but it's also not something that I like either.
Application
Scooping out the pomade feels pretty typical like most gel-type pomades. Comes out really easy and has this jelly feel to it. Breaks down just as easy and starts to feel slightly tacky in your hands. Goes into your hair with some tug and pull so I'd recommend applying into damp hair.
Slickness
Combing the product through is definitely manageable, but you don't get enough stickiness to tame some of the strays. Especially once it starts to dry up, it gets harder to keep some hairs in place. You might have to wet comb as time goes by during styling.
Control
The product styles just like majority of the other gel-types in the market. Especially once it starts to firm up, it'll be easy to get height but it really sacrifices the amount of shape that you can get. It also dries up fairly quickly, so you might have to rush styling your hair more than usual.
Strength
As advertised, you truly do get a strong hold with this pomade. One of the perks of it hardening up is that you can really push the boundaries with the amount of height that you wanna get. Once the product fully settles in your hair, you won't really have to worry about it going anywhere.Shine
Any shine that you initially get will dull down to a low or even matte shine. A typical quality with gel-types.Durability
Even though gel-type pomades that harden up aren't exactly a favourite of mine, I cannot deny the fact that it has little to no issue holding up throughout the day. It can obviously hold up in hot weather and you're not going to have to bother about losing height and such. However, I do find a few strays coming loose especially around the sides. And in the event of an emergency, if you have to restyle it's gonna be more troublesome because you can only wet-comb to reactivate the product.
Washability
A rinse is pretty much all you need. A thing to note is that my hair didn't feel completely terrible after washing it out, but I can't say it feels great either. You might wanna follow it up with a conditioner or a hair tonic just to bring some life back into your hair.
Price-point
Local resellers sell it at an average price of $18 SGD ($13.24 USD). Very well priced if you ask me, especially for the amount that you get.Verdict
Out of all the Malaysian pomades that I've seen, I think that Jadioc is the one that I come across most often. I've seen it being sold at local malls, being listed on Carousell and I've even seen them on Mr. Pomade. I've to admit, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of reach that this brand has achieved. As for the product itself, I think it's pretty safe to say that it's just an average gel-type pomade. As much as I don't think it's a bad product, it doesn't exceed my expectations. I think it's just a run-of-the-mill orthodox water-based pomade and it works well enough for me to not hate it.
Jadioc's Black Jacket is definitely for those looking for something simple and easy to use. If you want a product where you can just set and forget, this might be what you're looking for. You also get a lot of product at a lower cost. If bigger brands like Suavecito or Layrite cost too much where you're from, this is a solid alternative.
