Lockhart's Heavy Hold Fire & Brimstone Hair Pomade review

With Halloween creeping around the corner, Lockhart's never fails to restock their ever popular seasonal pomade; Fire & Brimstone. A slick product that smells like a burning flame. What's not to love? So when the Michigan-based home-brewers dropped a brand new Heavy Hold version of the pomade, my immediate response was 'Add to cart'.

Packaging

Lockhart's Heavy Hold F&B comes in a black 4 oz tin with metallic red labels. If you're familiar with how it's medium hold counterpart looks like, it's basically the opposite colour scheme of that. Now I know that the label has the alchemical symbol for sulfur on it, but I can't help but think of King Diamond whenever I see it.

Scent

This is probably the most definitive quality of the pomade. It smells like hot burning charcoal and I think it's absolutely divine. This is what Heavy Metal smells like.

Application

Scooping the pomade out is really easy. Even the top layer takes minimum effort to scoop out. Breaking it down and going into your hair is a breeze. Expect little to no resistance.

Slickness

Even though this is a heavy hold pomade, you get a lot of slickness with it. A product that falls more on the greasy side of the heavy hold spectrum.

Control

Working with this product kind of feels like you're using a medium hold with a little more kick. Everything's nice and slick but you can still feel the control you'd get with a heavy hold pomade.

Strength

The hold on this is definitely more compared to the Medium Hold F&B, but I personally feel this is more on the medium heavy side of things. I can still get decent height out of the product, but it doesn't last as long as I'd like it to be.

Shine

Easily one of the more shinier heavy hold pomades out in the market. Adds a nice lustre to your hair.

Durability

This being on the more greasy side of things, I wasn't expecting it to endure the heat as well as other heavy hold pomades out in the market. I did lose a little volume throughout the day, but the product still retains enough hold and slickness to restyle without any issues. The scent definitely gets subtle with time, but you can still smell it lingering when you run your fingers through your hair.

 Washability

Nothing out of the ordinary 3-4 washes with shampoo.

Price-point

If memory serves me right, I bought the Medium Hold F&B last year on The Panic Room's webstore which cost me $24 SGD ($17.62 USD). They don't seem to be stocking the heavy hold version on their shelves so I had to buy the heavy hold edition on Lockhart's official online store. Including shipping, that cost me $32.42 SGD ($23.81 USD). Not the cheapest, but anything close to the $30 range is reasonable for me.

Verdict

This product is definitely reminiscent of it's popular counterpart; Goon Grease. While they both have certain differences between the two, you can't deny that they both perform remarkably similar to each other. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Lockhart's skimped out and simply slapped on a new scent and gave it a new name. All I'm saying is that this is a great pomade. I absolutely love the scent and that alone is a good enough reason to give this product a try. If you've yet to smell this pomade, you're missing out.
