Big Slick Super Heavy Hair Pomade review

Big Slick has always been one of the many brands on my 'to-buy' list. The number of positive reviews I've heard from their products are endless and that has always piqued my interest. Unfortunately, their pomades aren't easily available here in Singapore. Due to that and high shipping costs, I've always put off buying their products. That all changed when I heard news of them adding a Super Heavy hold to their line. Now I'm an absolute sucker for heavy hold pomades. Lighter holds don't seem to agree with my hair very well so I've always tried to stay clear from them. The moment Big Slick's Super Heavy Hair Pomade went up for sale on their Etsy, I spared any hesitation and purchased it.

Packaging

The Big Slick Super Heavy Hair Pomade comes in a 3.4 oz / 100g metal tin. At least that's what's stated on the packaging. Comparing this to my other 4 oz pomades, I could've sworn the amount you get with this was just as much. My eyes may be playing tricks on me. Moving on.

Scent

The scent of the pomade is advertised as 'Island Bay Rum'. Now I've no idea what's that supposed to smell like. What I get is a spicy, cinnamon, sandalwood kind of scent. While I know many will enjoy the scent, I personally don't care for it that much.

Application

Scooping the top layer of this stuff is hard. You'll need to apply quite a lot of pressure to get it going. Once you get past the top layer though, everything else scoops out reasonably easy. Breaking down the pomade is what you'd expect from a heavy hold pomade. The stuff gets pretty waxy and grippy which is a good sign of things to come. Applying this into your hair isn't too bad. Some tugging and pulling to be expected, but nothing more than the usual.

Slickness

This being a waxy pomade, you'd expect a ton of resistance but that's not the case here. My comb is able to glide through my hair with minimal resistance.

Control

Styling with this pomade is predictable from that of a heavy hold. My sides were able to stay down nice and tight without facing any strays and I was able to style everything else without any struggle. The product allows you to style messier pomps as well which makes it pretty versatile.

 Strength

Just as advertised. This stuff has an insane amount of hold. I can get killer height and volume with this pomade.

Shine

The shine on this product is pretty low. Has more of a matte finish.

Durability

The weather here in Singapore has been hot as hell lately which makes me sweat even more than usual. I also walk out in the sun quite a bit to get to work and back home. My hair managed to endure all that really well. Of course, a few hairs did fall out of place and restyling was needed. That's just how life goes. But I'm able to restyle my hair without sacrificing much of the strength and volume with this pomade. The scent gets really soft and subtle as the hours pass. You'll catch whiffs of it every now and then, but it's not as noticeable.

Washability

I'd say 3-4 showers with shampoo should do the trick.

Price-point

Like I mentioned earlier on, I bought this off their Etsy store. It cost me a total of $37.95 SGD ($27.89 USD) with shipping. Obviously not the cheapest option. Until a local retailer could stock this stuff in their store, getting it online from Etsy is the only way to get this if you're not from the US.

Verdict

To sum things up, I like the Big Slick Super Heavy a lot. It has a lot of qualities that I look for in a pomade and it's able to withstand hot asian weather just fine. The only thing that I would change about the pomade is the scent. The overall performance of this pomade reminds me of Lockhart's Heavy Hold. If it came down to picking between the two, I'd pick Lockhart's just because of the scent. Nonetheless, I still think this is a pomade worth checking out. Whether you're a fan of heavy holds or are looking for something to beat the heat, the Big Slick Super Heavy is a pomade you need to add to your collection.
