Ziggy Supply Sang Nila Cream Pomade review

By now, I trust that most (or at least some) of you are familiar with Singaporean homebrewers, Ziggy Supply. I've featured them multiple times on this channel and today, we're looking at one of their latest products. Here we have Sang Nila Cream Pomade; an unorthodox water-based pomade featuring a creamy consistency with a firm hold. With that said, let's dig into the details.

Packaging

Sang Nila comes in the standard 3.5 oz plastic jar that you get with most Ziggy products. The label on the lid features a simplistic and minimalist design; the lion mascot stamped right in the center and the basic information surrounds it with blue accents. The side label follows suit with the ingredients and information well displayed across the label. I personally like this design theme over the past Ziggy products and hope to see the others revamped into something similar as well.

Scent

Called the merlion schpitz, it is a freash oceanic scent with a hint of green apple. It smells exactly like how it sounds; fresh, clean with a slight sour candy vibe. I enjoy it quite a lot myself and it's also a scent that stays subtle throughout the day.

Application

As expected, you get a nice creamy scoop that requires little to no effort. Breaks down just the same with some tack and dryness making its presence. It applies with some very minor tug and pull, and I find applying into dry hair would really maximise the amount of hold that you could get from the pomade. If it's still too much resistance for you, do apply into slightly damp or towel dried hair.

Slickness

Combing through the pomade is pretty easy. Has a small amount of resistance and the slickness is able to keep the hair pretty well in place altogether.

Control

Styling with this is intuitive and simple. You can get a fair amount of height and volume with it and the slight denseness helps to give it a bit more overall structure.

Strength

I find that the hold, while sufficient, feels to be slightly towards a medium-firm rather than being a true firm hold. It doesn't feel as sturdy though it's still able to keep your hair well in place for a good portion of the day.

Shine

You can get a low to medium shine with this. A nice amount overall.

Durability

While the pomade is able to withstand throughout the day well, I find that the hold and slickness lifts a little bit after several hours. Especially if you're outside, I find myself needing to comb things back in place and it starts to feel a tad bit dryer. On the plus side, it lends itself to providing a slightly looser style which can sport a fairly decent fingercombed look if desired.

Washability

I find that 1-2 washes with shampoo is enough to fully wash the product out. Rinsing it leaves behind a nice, clean buildup that can assist in next day styling.

Price-point

Sang Nila costs $20 SGD ($14.86 USD). International shipping prices may vary depending on where it's shipped to.

Verdict

I was pretty surprised upon the announcement of Sang Nila. Seeing that Ziggy already had Temasek Pomade, another UWB pomade, I was questioning the need for another iteration of it.

After several uses, I can definitely see the differences and similarities between Sang Nila and Temasek Pomade. Sang Nila does a better job at providing slickness and shine. I find that the hold is pretty flexible and can range between being a medium or a firm. It's a straightforward, user-friendly pomade altogether and I find the scent to be really pleasant as well. I think what it mainly lacks is being able to retain that hold and slickness. Also for something advertised as a cream pomade, I would've personally preferred an easier washout. The buildup, although nice and clean, doesn't seem to lend much of an added boost of hold when used the following day.

Sang Nila is a definite step forward from Temasek Pomade. The qualities it bears are things that I can appreciate from it, and its shortcomings can easily be overlooked. If you're looking for a solid UWB pomade, Ziggy Supply's Sang Nila Cream Pomade deserves your attention.
