Templeton Tonics Summit Pomade review

You might remember a review of Compass by Templeton Tonics on here many months ago. It's a lighter holding product with nourishing capabilities that made it great, but many were begging for a stronger holding version of that. Chris Templeton has decided to deliver that demand. Today we have Templeton Tonics' Summit; a water-based pomade with a firm hold. Does this product deserve to be on the Templeton mantle? Let's dive in and dig deeper.

Packaging

Summit comes in the familiar green 4 oz plastic tub, but with a silver lid this time. Labels on the side and lid are consistent throughout with the overall mountain theme and it even has a compass graphic on the lid. Everything just looks really cohesive, not just within the product, but altogether with the other Templeton products as well.

Scent

Just like Compass, Summit is available in several scent options. I decided to go with Vagabond for this pomade which is a smoky scent from Templeton. Initially in the jar, it smelled rather sweet and musky, almost chocolatey in some sense. Once you scoop it out though, the scent really changes and you get a nice strong smoky hit. It's a slightly sweet, warm smoky smell and it took me a while to get used to it to be frank. It's a rather prominent scent which lasts throughout the day fairly well.

Application

With a small amount of pressure applied, you'll be able to scoop out the product. Definitely has a firmer consistency compared to Compass but it still retains that familiar creaminess. It breaks down just as easy, but I do notice some separation with the wax beads. Not a major problem, you just have to focus a little on breaking the product down fully. Applies into the hair with little to no issue with almost no tugging or pulling.

Slickness

Despite the waxier and thicker appearance of this pomade, it has a surprising amount of slickness to it. Combs through really easily and it's able to keep everything nice and tight.

Control

The nice balance of hold and slickness provides you with excellent control for styling. It's able to provide ample height and volume while still controlling strays. It's not overly lightweight nor is it too dense. Just nicely balanced overall.

Strength

A firm hold that many others have argued to be a medium. Personally, I think it falls right in between those categories. It's like a medium hold with an extra kick to it. I also notice that the hold gets better throughout the day as the product does settle in the hair to a certain extent.

Shine

Surprisingly this product provides me with more shine than I imagined it would. A tiny bit more than a medium shine.

Durability

Despite it's more slick nature, I find that it can withstand the weather here pretty well. It's no surprise that I do need a touch up every now and then, but it still puts up a fight for what it is. It retains enough hold and slickness to be restyled well.

Washability

1 wash with shampoo should get everything out. Rinsing it would leave behind a very light, soft and slightly waxy buildup.

Price-point

Summit costs $43.63 SGD ($33 USD) including shipping to Singapore. Not the most affordable pomade, but it might be worth it depending on what your preferences in products are.

Verdict

Templeton Tonics is definitely making their mark in the pomade game. They started out making brilliant hair tonics and proceeded to branch out into styling products. Without a doubt, they have been making killer products one after another, and Summit is just another great pomade.

This pomade is exactly what I pictured a heavier holding Compass would be. Not overly strong and waxy, still has that creamy and smooth application and just styles absolutely fantastically. The scent upholds the Templeton name and it even endures well enough for the weather here. I do wish the hold was slightly more true to a firm and that breaking it down didn't separate the wax beads in the product, but that's not really a huge problem to begin with.

To... Summit up, this Templeton Tonics pomade is the true elder brother to Compass. Has the same familiar characteristics while being able to provide with a slight boost of hold. It's no secret that I highly recommend this pomade. Reach the summit of your hairstyling potential, get yourself a jar of Templeton Tonics' Summit.
