Big Slick Heavy Hold Hair Pomade review

Big Slick has always been a brand that I've been fond of early into my pomade venture. The simple and consistent designs have always caught my eye and they always have a more unique scent selection. Mid last year I decided to finally pull the trigger and purchased several of their products. For today we're gonna have a look at their Heavy Hold Hair Pomade; an oil based pomade from Big Slick's main lineup. Without further ado, let's get into the product.

Packaging

Big Slick Heavy comes in a 3.4 oz metal tin with a screw top lid, same as all the other products from their line. Label design is very minimalistic and clean, with pink accents to help distinguish it's hold type. On the bottom of the tin is where majority of the information can be found. Overall, it's very well presented and pleasant.

Scent

The pomade comes in a dirty mint scent, and the name couldn't be anymore accurate. You get a strong minty smell that's paired with an earthy musk and it smells purely fantastic. The closest smell that I would compare this to is with Lush's Dirty smell. A rather gender neutral scent that smells really good. It's not overpowering either and stays subtle enough to be noticed within close range.

Application

Despite being a heavy hold pomade, scooping it out is pretty easy and it comes out like a thick grease. Breaking it down feels really slick and slightly waxy and applies into the hair with some minimal tugging or pulling.

Slickness

Combing the product through your hair is nothing short of easy. Goes through like nothing, but still has some resistance indicating the hold you're gonna get from the pomade. Has the ability to keep everything nicely slicked down.

Control

Styling with it isn't too challenging. Despite the slickness and lack of a waxy feel, it still provides a good amount of hold. It's balance between qualities gives it good height and shape while still being able to stay neatly tight.

Strength

Even though it's stated to be a heavy hold, Big Slick is pretty known to have their holds be a slight notch lower than advertised. That's exactly the case you get with this pomade. It feels a tad bit more like a medium, maybe a medium-heavy at best. Despite that, it still provides a good amount of hold to hold your hair in place.

Shine

Provides a medium to low shine; a tiny bit more shine compared to other heavy holds in the market.

Durability

The pomade may be a bit greasier in nature, but it still holds up in hot weather pretty well. I do find a hair or two falling out of place, but it's easily recombed back into place. You don't lose any slickness so it's able to keep everything nice and tight throughout the entire day.

Washability

Washing it out would take about 2 showers with shampoo, maybe 3 max. It leaves behind a nice and clean buildup which gives you a solid foundation for next day styling. Bonus tip: that buildup makes the pomade feel like a heavy hold.

Price-point

Bought directly from their Etsy store, it'll cost $34.78 SGD ($26 USD) including shipping to Singapore. Not the cheapest, but I don't think it costs all that bad either.

Verdict

Big Slick doesn't have a big enough following here in Singapore. There are no resellers here that stock their stuff and you'd be lucky enough to see them being sold through the second hand market. That's a shame because I really do think that their stuff deserves more attention here.

After using the heavy hold several times, I can honestly say that I like it. The application is really smooth and slick, it can provide a solid hairstyle, the scent is very unique and it washes out fairly easy for a heavy. Yes, the hold may feel more like a medium rather than a true heavy but as mentioned earlier, you can easily use it on next day buildup to amp up the hold.

Big Slick Heavy Hold is definitely a solid oil based pomade. I think it makes for a great user-friendly product. If you've yet to try it, you should highly give it a shot. With Big Slick Heavy Hold, it's hardly a gamble since it'll work great for your hair.
